General information
S.I. Module 3
A Practical approach of Sensory Integration

Sensory Integration Module 3: The Art and Science of Sensory Integration Treatment – A Practical Approach
“The kind of involvement necessary to achieve the state wherein the child becomes effectively self-directing within the structure set by the therapist cannot be commanded; it must be elicited. Therein lies the art of therapy”. Ayres, 1972, p.259
The aim of this module is for participants to develop in-depth knowledge and experience in sensory integration theory and therapy in order to support critical reasoning and decision making of their clients. Participants will be afforded the unique opportunity to observes, analyse and reflect on treatment sessions using Sensory Integration as a frame of reference, facilitated by the lecturer.
Participants will be expected to evaluate the effectiveness of therapy through careful assessment and research. The use of reflection will be critically explored to enhance application of theory to practice. Furthermore, participants will be guided in the process of assessment and orchestration of therapy sessions based on the theory of Sensory Integration.
Day 1 – Advanced Theory and Hypothesis-Driven Practice
Main Themes
• Deepening theoretical understanding: Participants revisit and expand upon foundational SI theory, exploring how it evolves into clinical hypotheses.
• Theory-to-practice translation: Emphasis on how theoretical constructs guide intervention planning and decision-making.
• Sensory systems in therapy: A focused review of each sensory system (tactile, vestibular, proprioceptive, visual, auditory) and their therapeutic implications.
• Collaborative learning: Small group work fosters peer-to-peer learning, culminating in presentations that apply theory to practice.
• Case study analysis: Participants engage with a detailed case, using SI hypotheses to design an intervention plan.
Learning Outcomes
• Confidently articulate advanced SI theory and its clinical relevance.
• Generate and apply SI hypotheses to guide treatment planning.
• Identify therapeutic strategies linked to specific sensory systems.
• Collaborate effectively in clinical reasoning and presentation.
• Begin integrating theory into real-world case analysis.
Day 2 – Treatment Planning and Clinical Reasoning
Main Themes
• Bridging assessment and therapy: Participants learn to interpret assessment data and translate it into meaningful, goal-oriented interventions.
• Clinical reasoning: Development of structured decision-making processes to support therapeutic choices.
• Naming and framing interventions: Understanding how to define and communicate therapy strategies within the SI framework.
• Designing interventions: Using models of SI and SPD to create targeted plans for modulation, discrimination, and praxis.
• Goal setting and scaling: Introduction to Goal Attainment Scaling (GAS) as a method for setting measurable goals and tracking progress.
• Outcome measurement: Tools and strategies for evaluating therapeutic effectiveness.
• Structured planning: The 5-step model for organising comprehensive treatment plans.
• Interactive learning: Includes instructor-led presentations, group work, and video analysis.
Learning Outcomes
• Translate assessment findings into structured, theory-based interventions.
• Apply clinical reasoning to justify and adapt therapy plans.
• Use GAS methodology to set and evaluate goals.
• Design interventions tailored to specific sensory processing challenges.
• Present and critique treatment plans collaboratively.
Day 3 – The Art and Science of Intervention
Main Themes
• Therapy environment: Exploration of how physical space, equipment, and atmosphere influence therapeutic outcomes.
• Fidelity to treatment: Introduction to the Fidelity Measure Tool to ensure adherence to SI principles.
• Detailed intervention design: Focused planning for modulation, discrimination, postural control, and praxis.
• Preparing for clinical application: Participants begin designing interventions based on real assessments in preparation for working with children.
• Multimodal learning: Includes group work, video analysis, and presentations to reinforce concepts.
Learning Outcomes
• Understand the role of the therapy space in supporting SI intervention.
• Use the Fidelity Tool to evaluate and refine clinical practice.
• Design nuanced interventions for core SI challenges.
• Prepare for hands-on therapy with children through collaborative planning.
Days 4 & 5 – Clinical Practice with Children
Main Themes
• Live therapy sessions: Participants work in small supervised groups with four children, applying SI interventions in real time.
• Fidelity-based reflection: Post-session discussions use the Fidelity Tool to assess intervention quality and guide improvements.
• Intervention redesign: Based on observations and reflections, participants refine their plans for Day 5.
• Group collaboration: Emphasis on teamwork, shared learning, and reflective practice.
• Preparation for final presentations: Day 5 concludes with guidance on preparing case study presentations for Day 6.
Learning Outcomes
• Deliver SI therapy in a live clinical setting with children.
• Use fidelity measures to assess and improve intervention strategies.
• Reflect on therapeutic outcomes and adapt plans accordingly.
• Collaborate in clinical teams to support learning and development.
• Prepare comprehensive case presentations based on real clinical experience.
Day 6 – Integration, Expansion, and Conclusion
Main Themes
• Case study presentations: Participants present their intervention journeys, including assessment, planning, implementation, and outcomes.
• Group feedback and discussion: Constructive peer and instructor feedback fosters deeper understanding.
• Expanding SI applications: Exploration of SI therapy in new contexts, including adult populations and mental health.
• Tool and equipment consolidation: Review of therapeutic tools and how to select appropriate equipment for diverse needs.
• Course closure: Final reflections, remarks, and certificate ceremony.
Learning Outcomes
• Present and defend a complete SI case study with clarity and clinical insight.

Training, a steady value for more than twenty years now, leads physiotherapy and keeps it at a very high level, well done to George Karambalis and his associates, we owe a lot to all of you.
EPIMORFOSIS organizes specialization seminars for rehabilitation professionals. I’ve watched a lot. I strongly recommend you trust EPIMORFOSIS for your specialization and lifelong information.
EPIMORFOSIS justifies its name by providing high quality courses. George Karampalis operates more like a constant “trainee” and less like an entrepreneur, and this is an additional positive fact in the effort that is put by the workers and teachers of EPIMORFOSIS.
I have known George Karampalis and EPIMORFOSIS for many years. I’ve had the opportunity to join several clinical courses and I can argue that, at the level of organisation and selection of trainers, they have a high level of recognised prestige.
My first steps in professional specialization started with EPIMORFOSIS and continue. It has been with us all these years, covering the need for modern and documented knowledge, in collaboration with internationally acclaimed educational institutions.
The best physiotherapists training institution. It enables the development of the necessary knowledge for clinical reasoning. High-quality training without having to travel abroad.
