Matthew is a physical therapist, educator, and international instructor specializing in orthopaedic manual therapy, musculoskeletal rehabilitation, and clinical education. He currently works as a Clinical Physical Therapist and Site Coordinator of Clinical Education at Putnam Physical Therapy, a role he has held since June 2025.


Previously, he served as a Senior Physical Therapist at Tier 1 Orthopedic and Neurosurgical Institute from January to May 2025. Before returning to full-time clinical practice, Matthew spent several years in academia at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga Doctor of Physical Therapy Program, where he held the positions of Associate Professor of Practice (2022–2024) and Assistant Professor of Practice (2017–2022). During this time, he taught extensively in the musculoskeletal and manual therapy curriculum. His primary teaching responsibilities included courses such as Musculoskeletal Examination, Gross Clinical Anatomy, Physical Therapy Management of Musculoskeletal Disorders of the Spine, Research Investigation, Advanced Manual Therapy, Differential Diagnosis in Physical Therapy, and licensure preparation courses. He also served as an assistant or clinical laboratory instructor for courses focused on upper and lower extremity musculoskeletal management and advanced clinical orthopedics.


While at the university, he also worked as an Assistant Clinical Instructor and Staff Physical Therapist at the UTC DPT Pro Bono Physical Therapy Clinic, contributing to clinical education and patient care. In addition, he worked in clinical practice as a PRN Physical Therapist at Siskin Rehabilitation Hospital (2024) and Chattanooga Physical Therapy (2021–2022).


Earlier in his career, Matthew held leadership and clinical roles including Supervisor and Senior Clinical Physical Therapist at Research Physical Therapy Specialists (2015–2017) and Director of Clinical Services and Staff Physical Therapist at Putnam Physical Therapy Services (2012–2015). He also worked as a Staff Physical Therapist at Professional Therapy Associates in Kalispell, Montana (2011–2012).


Matthew completed a Fellowship in Orthopaedic Manual Physical Therapy through the American Academy of Orthopaedic Manual Physical Therapists, in the program of the American Academy of Manipulative Therapy (2014–2015). He earned his Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) from the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga (2008–2011).


He also holds a Master of Science in Education in Human Performance and Sport Studies and a Bachelor of Science in Exercise Science, both from the University of Tennessee Knoxville.


In addition to his academic faculty roles, Matthew has taught internationally and nationally in continuing professional education. He has been a lead instructor and course developer for the École D’Assas Physiotherapy Training Center in Paris, where he delivered seminars on lumbosacral evaluation, cervical spine manual therapy, modern mechanisms of manual physical therapy, and cervicogenic headache management.


He has also delivered professional education courses for the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) Tennessee and South Carolina chapters, including presentations on cervicogenic headache management and instrument-assisted soft tissue mobilization. Earlier in his teaching career, he served as instructional faculty at the University of South Carolina Doctor of Physical Therapy Program, where he taught courses in clinical pathology, differential diagnosis, and therapeutic exercise.


Matthew has completed extensive continuing education across manual therapy, rehabilitation science, and clinical education. His training includes coursework in therapeutic neuroscience education, fascial manipulation (Stecco method), dynamic neuromuscular stabilization, spinal manipulation, acupuncture and dry needling, neuroimmune system mobilization, and evidence-based musculoskeletal examination and treatment. He has also participated in numerous conferences and professional forums including the American Physical Therapy Association Combined Sections Meeting and the American Academy of Orthopaedic Manual Physical Therapists National Conference.


Matthew has contributed to several peer-reviewed publications and conference presentations focusing on pain mechanisms, dry needling, and clinical practice. His work has appeared in journals such as Archives of Rehabilitation Research and Clinical Translation and Acupuncture in Physiotherapy. He has presented research posters at major conferences including the International Federation of Orthopaedic Manipulative Physical Therapists World Conference and the American Physical Therapy Association Combined Sections Meeting.


Matthew has been actively involved in professional service and academic leadership. At the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, he served on numerous committees including the Faculty Senate, curriculum committees, admissions committees, and post-professional education committees.


Within the American Physical Therapy Association Tennessee chapter, he served on the legislative committee and contributed to the Dry Needling Task Force that helped develop legislation allowing dry needling within the scope of physical therapy practice in Tennessee. He also mentors early-career clinicians through the APTA Tennessee Mentorship Program.


He is also the co-founder and instructor of Upskill Clinical Education, an initiative providing national and international professional education seminars in orthopaedic manual therapy, dry needling, and rehabilitation. Additionally, he previously served as an instructor and board member for the Institute of Manual & Integrative Therapy.


In recognition of his contributions to physical therapy education, Matthew received the Outstanding Physical Therapy Educator Award from APTA Tennessee in 2022. He has also received research and academic grants from the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga Faculty Grants Committee and the American Physical Therapy Association Tennessee chapter.


Matthew is a member in good standing of the American Physical Therapy Association, the American Academy of Orthopaedic Manual Physical Therapists, the National Athletic Trainers’ Association, the National Strength and Conditioning Association, and the Titleist Performance Institute.


He holds an active Tennessee Physical Therapy license, is a Fellow of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Manual Physical Therapists (FAAOMPT), and maintains multiple professional certifications including Certified Athletic Trainer (ATC), Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS), Certified in Dry Needling (Cert. DN), and Certified in Spinal Manipulative Therapy (Cert. SMT).
