A Practical approach of Sensory Integration

Sensory Integration Module 3: The Art and Science of Sensory Integration Treatment – A Practical Approach

“The kind of involvement necessary to achieve the state wherein the child becomes effectively self-directing within the structure set by the therapist cannot be commanded; it must be elicited. Therein lies the art of therapy”. Ayres, 1972, p.259

The aim of this module is for participants to develop in-depth knowledge and experience in sensory integration theory and therapy in order to support critical reasoning and decision making of their clients. Participants will be afforded the unique opportunity to observes, analyse and reflect on treatment sessions using Sensory Integration as a frame of reference, facilitated by the lecturer.

Participants will be expected to evaluate the effectiveness of therapy through careful assessment and research. The use of reflection will be critically explored to enhance application of theory to practice. Furthermore, participants will be guided in the process of assessment and orchestration of therapy sessions based on the theory of Sensory Integration.

The module is delivered in three blocks.

The first block of 2,5 days covers:

  • Principles of SI Intervention,
  • Discussion of master clinician’s video footage with clinical reasoning;
  • Methods of assessment
  • Introduction to basic research to improve evidence base
  • Current evidence for SI
  • Assessment of children from an SI perpsective

The second block covers:

  • Principles of treatment
  • The art of therapy
  • Clinical applications with real-life clients
  • Discussion of the sessions and analysis of activity choises

Upon completion of the second block participants will be expected to:

  • Assess a client from their caseload
  • Design an intervention programme based on SI theory
  • Deliver an intervention
  • Video some of the sessions and keep a log of progress/ thoughts

Learning Outcomes:

On completion of the module the participants will be able to:

  1. Critically utilise sensory integration theory to support treatment planning
  2. Demonstrate advanced skill in the area of sensory integration intervention and clinical reasoning.
  3. Reflect on their own learning
  4. Design interventions in a skilled manner adhering to the principles of SI treatment
