Pilates_Fisios4The method Pilates Fisios®

Pilates Fisios® is a rehabilitation method that integrates the original principles of Pilates with the most recent medical and scientific knowledge.

Pilates Fisios stems from the need to encode a rehabilitation method based on the insights of Pilates but which also meets the criteria of modern research in medical science and that differs from other approaches more general of “fitness” or “well-being “. Developed by the physiotherapist Silvia Raneri, Pilates Fisios® aims to return the patient to the best functionality motor can be whatever his pathology (orthopedic or neurological), considering both physical and mental and psychological implications, and to make the patient independent in managing their own limitations and their potential mobility in everyday life.

Pilates Fisios® places the patient at the center of the therapeutic process. This approach, called “metacognitive”, tends to develop in the patient’s awareness of what he is doing, why he does it, when it is appropriate to do so and under what conditions; It tends to form the ability to be “direct managers “of their ability , modifying them actively with its evaluations and functional indications. Thus, through awareness and direct management of their motor skills, the patient can recognize, reduce or eliminate compensatory behaviors he developed and replace them with more functional behaviors.

This method offers a comprehensive view of the patient and his uniqueness, not only focusing on segmental rehabilitation or on relations between the muscles but explores the connections that exist between the various parts of the body and the way in which each person develops strategies that result at a target. The exercises and movement become “therapeutic tools” useful first to “evaluate” the patient and then to “rehabilitate”. That is why Pilates Fisios® not based on standard protocols to be applied depending on the pathologies, but it teaches and promotes the ability of the physical therapist to develop a critical reasoning goal-oriented rehabilitation treatment. This also enables its integration with other rehabilitation methods without altering the basic principles.

Pilates Fisios® can be practiced by anyone of any age as a rehabilitation treatment and as maintenance treatment to decrease the risk of recurrence.Pilates Fisios 1

The Fundamental Principles

Pilates Fisios® is based on six principles:

1) Core stability and motor functionality. Core is all of the lumbar spine, the pelvic girdle and the specific muscles that contribute to the maintenance of stability. Its stability is obtained through the synergy of the abdominal region with lumbar support and ensures the whole body, minimal energy consumption and reduced incidence of back pain.

2) Conscious breathing. A smooth and full breathing is part of each exercise which becomes one with the movement, accompanies, supports and helps to stabilize the center of gravity… “mainly learn to breathe correctly..” Pilates wrote. In addition, a good breathing oxygenates the blood and improves circulation.

3) Accuracy and Alignment. A correct postural alignment during movement predetermines increased efficiency of the movement itself and corrects imbalances.

4) Concentration. It requires the ability to focus on all parts of the own body to control its position during the movement. It feeds the inner dialogue with his own body (proprioceptive sensations) and helps improve performance through the perception of every detail.

5) Motor control with metacognitive approach. A good control of your body protects it from trauma and injury. The control should be practiced and developed gradually; first performing simple exercises in which you are able to maintain a proper postural alignment and a good stabilization, and subsequently expanding the range movements most challenging. Accelerating the acquisition phase of motor control would only use compensation and prepare to trauma and pain.

6) Fluidity and Coordination. They produce the feeling of ease’ and lightness while performing the movement and when they are fully incorporated.

Pilates Fisios 2What cures

Indicated as rehabilitation treatment in cases of: – changes in posture and scoliosis, sciatica, low back pain, herniated disc and other spinal disorders – Parkinson’s disease, multiple sclerosis, hemiplegia, sequelae of head trauma, paraplegia.. – fibromyalgia, lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, osteoporosis, osteoarthritis, periarthritis – after cancer surgery, cardiac or respiratory failure – functional rehabilitation of hip, knee, shoulder etc.. Even after ligament reconstruction surgery, prosthesis – to improve control and continence of the pelvic floor in both men and women – during and after pregnancy to return to form – in geriatric medicine to compensate the lack of movement and improve the autonomy – in athletes (golf, tennis, surfing, horseback riding, cycling, football ..) to improve athletic performance, sports performance and reduce the risk of injury.

Pilates Fisios® corrects the wrong positions, restores physical vitality, invigorates the mind and elevates the spirit. Following its fundamental principles and using the equipment and floor exercises, working on body and mind by coordinating the deep and superficial musculature with the center of the body.
